The Complete Belgian Malinois Training Schedule by Age
One of the most common questions we get at MalPro Academy is: what should I be training my Malinois at each age? The answer matters more than you think. Training a Malinois too hard too early can damage drive. Training too soft too late creates behavioral problems that take months to undo.
8-12 Weeks: Foundation Imprinting
At this age, your Malinois puppy is a sponge. Focus on: name recognition, marker conditioning (yes/click = reward), crate training, socialization to surfaces, sounds, and people. Avoid: formal obedience, leash corrections, bite work, or any pressure. Sessions should be 2-3 minutes maximum, 5-6 times per day. Play is training. Training is play.
3-6 Months: Basic Obedience Foundations
Introduce sit, down, come, place, and loose leash walking. All work should be reward-based with high-value food or tug. Begin structured socialization outings. This is when prey drive emerges. Channel it through tug games with rules (out, hold, give). Avoid off-leash work in uncontrolled environments. Sessions: 5-10 minutes, 3-4 times daily.
6-12 Months: Adolescence and Drive Development
The teenage phase. Your Mal will test boundaries, show selective hearing, and display increased energy. This is normal. Increase session duration to 15-20 minutes. Introduce distraction training, duration commands, and distance work. Begin scent games and tracking foundations. If pursuing protection work, this is when a professional can evaluate temperament for bite suitability.
12-18 Months: Advanced Obedience
Your Malinois is physically maturing but mentally still developing. Focus on proofing all commands under distraction, off-leash reliability in controlled environments, and sport-specific foundations (IGP tracking, obedience routines, bite work with qualified helper). This is where the MalPro 90-Day Roadmap delivers its biggest results.
18+ Months: Specialization
With solid foundations in place, your Mal is ready for specialization: competition sport (IGP, PSA, French Ring), professional protection, detection work, or advanced companion training. The key is that all specialization builds on the foundations. Skip the foundations and specialization will always have cracks.
